Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams revealed his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams changed his position, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he maintains strong support.
“It's essential to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how important this election is,” the mayor remarked.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines globally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
This development followed a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
