Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police released video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
