Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
