Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
