The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
