Nearly twenty-five thousand households in Queensland's southeast found themselves without power on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms passed over the region, bringing wind gusts hitting 109 kilometers per hour.

Large Ice Stones and Broad Damage

Residents reported substantial frozen pellets as large as seven centimeters in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that multiple regions across the state had been affected by large hailstones.

Utility workers were working to restore power throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams deployed to manage the extensive power failures.

Victorian Weather Woes

Simultaneously, approximately one thousand energy customers in Victoria also experienced power outages after the metropolitan area experienced its wettest day in over 500 days.

State Emergency Services handled over five hundred requests for assistance across the area, mainly for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

At one point on yesterday, over 28,000 energy customers in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were predicted to continue along much of eastern Queensland this coming days as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coast.

The following day was forecast to be the most rainy day, with ongoing thunderstorm potential predicted across different parts of both states.

Health Warning

Medical authorities alerted that there was an greater possibility of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This caution comes after previous incidents where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the area.
