Jokic won the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "gut-wrenching" knee injury while the Denver Nuggets fell 147-123 to the Heat.

The star player sustained the injury towards the end of the second quarter following an unintentional contact with team-mate Jones.

His teammate stepped on the foot of the MVP, who instantly fell to the ground grabbing his leg.

The star, that is leading the NBA this season in rebounds and assists, had a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the game before incurring the setback.

The player will have an MRI on Tuesday to determine the severity of the problem.

"Immediately, he knew something was wrong," commented Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Anyone that suffers an injury, that's difficult, particularly a player as important as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We'll move on as a team. Clearly, right now, I'm focused primarily about Jokic personally and the frustration of facing an event of that nature."
